Carnival of Granville

Next Carnaval from February 8th to 12th 2013

The Carnival of Granville is held each year during the weekend before Mardi Gras.

This tradtional festival goes back to the times of the fishing expeditions to Newfoundland.
The first contemporary Carnaval was held 7 February 1875. The Carnival joined the tradition of the charity parties: among floats composing the cavalcade, " Charity Float " harvest some funds for the poorest.

  • On Friday : opening concert.
  • On Saturday : it's a day specially reserved for children. Parade of children in costume in the town centre, accompanied by the floats of His Majesty Carnival. Street entertainments are held at night with music groups strolling around and a funfair.
  • On Sunday : the grand cavalcade of floats and music groups starts in the early afternoon and lasts until the end of the evening. A compact crowd, costumed or not, accompanies this parade.
  • On Monday: "Bal à papa", the Ball of the Still Young takes place in the afternoon and the "Bal des Carnavaliers" is held in the town centre.
  • On Tuesday : the cavalcade of floats and music groups once again moves through the town towards the quays of the port where His Majesty Carnival will be put on trial, condemned to death and burned as it floats in the harbour. A gigantic confetti fight closes this day, just before the Intrigues come out into the night...
